Don't Subtract Add

                  Don’t Subtract, Add (2)
We are learning that problems like 34 + ___ = 51 and  51 — 43 = ___ have the same answers.

I had $83 and spent $58 on a book. How much was left? 58+2=60
60+20=80
80+3=83
58+25=83 so 83-58=25

There were 63 people on the bus and 27 got off. How many were left on the bus?
27+3= 30
30+30=60
60+3=63
27+36= 63 so 63-27=36

92 eggs were laid by the hens. By the afternoon 48 had hatched into chickens. How many eggs had not hatched?
48+2=50
50=40=90
90+2=92
48+44=92 so 92-48=44

Write number stories for these equations to show your understanding then solve each one using the ‘Don’t subtract, add’ strategy
